What spiritual boundaries do we need in our lives?

We need spiritual boundaries to help guard against false doctrine, immoral conduct, and destructive relationships that pull us away from godliness, and idols. Spiritual boundaries can serve us well in our striving for purity, godliness, and truth.

what does the bible say?

One of the most important areas of our life is the doctrines we live by. In a world filled with “teachings of demons” (1 Timothy 4:1), we must guard against false teachings as we are guided by biblical truth and the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, 26; 16:13-15; Ephesians 4:14-15; 1 Timothy 4:7). Church leaders and God’s Word can make us more discerning about truth (Ephesians 4:11-12; 2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16-17; Psalm 119:33). Avoiding certain relationships and environments that we feel will lead us into temptation is a spiritually wise move (Psalm 1:1-2, 101:3; Proverbs 4:14-15). Rather than be in close relationships with those who draw us toward worldliness, we should grow with believers who encourage us in godliness (Proverbs 13:20; 22:24; 27:17; 1 Corinthians 15:33; 2 Corinthians 6:14). We should also steer clear of participating in that which is sinful (2 Corinthians 6:17), including what may lead us into idolatry (Exodus 20:3). God has given us all we need to protect ourselves against spiritual attack (Ephesians 6:10-20).

from the old testament

  • Every doctrine we live by should align with God’s Word. The more we study Scripture, the more we can apply it to our lives: “Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end” (Psalm 119:33).
  • Avoiding (even just temporarily) places, people, events, and practices that we know from our past will expose us to ungodly temptation is a proactive way to set spiritual boundaries (Psalm 101:3; Proverbs 4:14-15).
  • Human nature is to become like those we spend time with, so we should be intentional about our companions—avoiding close bonds with the wicked but pursuing healthy relationships with believers who draw us closer to the truth (Proverbs 13:20; 22:24; 27:17).

from the new testament

  • Believers must “test all things” in light of God’s word and reject that which goes against Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
  • Believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, 26; 16:13-15), which helps us discern truth from lies.
  • We should invest in relationships that spur us to spiritual maturity rather than those that attempt to pull us away from God’s truth (1 Corinthians 15:33; 2 Corinthians 6:14).
  • Human beings are susceptible to idolatry, whether in the form of physical forms as the ancients had or through what we devote ourselves to . We must always have God on the throne of our life and separate ourselves from the world and its ways (2 Corinthians 6:17) and avoid doctrines that attempt to take us away from Him (Ephesians 4:14-15).
  • We can be intentional about listening to mature, orthodox teachers (Ephesians 4:11-12), but we must still do our part to make sure it lines up with the truth of the Scriptures (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
  • The Scriptures should be the basis by which we make our decisions. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.”
  • We should underst and God’s call for righteous living and set clear and solid boundaries for ourselves to help us obey His commands (2 Timothy 2:22).

implications for today

Boundaries bring clarity to property ownership, sports, and even school work. We put fences around all sorts of physical dangers such as swimming pools, high-voltage areas, and firing ranges. Boundaries are also important in our spiritual life. Spiritual boundaries protect us from false teaching and guide us to lead God-honoring lives. Where do you need to set spiritual boundaries? Is it in the entertainment you pursue? The people you hang around? Your daily habits? Taking stock of the areas of our lives we need to set spiritual boundaries helps us avoid pitfalls and mature as Christians. Just as we set boundaries around the kind of and amount of food we eat to maximize our health, spiritual boundaries help us to maintain healthy souls and a thriving connection with God.
