What does it mean to have peace with God?
Having peace with God comes when we trust in Jesus’ sacrifice, taking us from enemies of God to a restored relationship with Him. Peace with God is the end of spiritual conflict and the beginning of a secure, grace-filled relationship with our Creator.
what does the bible say?
Our default human condition is to live in opposition to God. Because of the sin of Adam and Eve, we are born with a sin nature that attempts to rule over us, take control of our minds, and keep us from the perfect peace that comes from God alone (Genesis 3, 4:7; Romans 5:12). The Old Testament records many times when God’s people broke relationship with Him by serving other gods (Judges 2:11-14; 2 Kings 17:7-18; Isaiah 1:2-4, 24-25). Similarly, our sin causes us to be at odds with God, deserving punishment (Isaiah 59:2; Romans 3:23; 6:23; Ephesians 2:1-3). We cannot reach a place of peace with God on our own. We need a Savior, which is why God sent His Son to atone for our sin, taking the punishment for us (Isaiah 53; John 3:16). The prophet Isaiah calls Jesus the “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6), and His birth brought peace to those who place their faith in Him (Luke 2:14). As sinners who deserve God’s wrath, we can place our faith in Christ, which wipes out our sins and repairs our relationship with God (Romans 5:8-10).
from the old testament
- Adam and Eve rebelled against God’s commands and lost the peaceful fellowship they once enjoyed with Him (Genesis 3:22-24).
- God will not live in peace with those serving false gods (Exodus 20:3-4; Joshua 24:19).
- The sacrifice of God’s suffering servant brings us back to peaceful fellowship (Isaiah 53:5). Isaiah also prophesied about the coming “Prince of Peace,” Jesus Christ (Isaiah 9:6).
- The prophet Jeremiah used a beautiful simile to communicate the refreshment of those who trust in God: “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit” (Jeremiah 17:7-8). Peace with God involves planting our lives near Him and drawing from Him as our source.
from the new testament
- The angels proclaimed peace with God when Jesus was born (Luke 2:14).
- Through Jesus, we can have peace with God (Romans 5:1).
- Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He promised us the Holy Spirit. John 14:27 says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
- God is not a God of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33).
- When we are Christ followers, we are filled with the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who daily provides us with the peace of God (Galatians 5:22-23; Philippians 4:4-9).
- Christ Himself is our peace with God (Ephesians 2:14).
- The Gospel message is called the “gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:15). Trusting in Jesus’ death and resurrection brings us peace with God.
- God desires all of us to be at peace with Him. In fact, it was His plan to create a way by which we could forever be at peace with Him; this plan was Him sending Jesus Christ, His Son, to Earth. After living a perfect life, Jesus was crucified, and His sacrifice made provision for the forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 4:15; 2 Corinthians 5:21).
implications for today
When we are at peace with God, it means we are able to be in a personal relationship with Him. We are free from the power of sin when we are submitted to Him as the Lord and the source of all we need. This brings incredible peace to us in all the affairs of our life. When we make mistakes, we can bring them to the Lord, seeking His forgiveness, and finding peace anew with Him (Hebrews 4:16; 1 John 1:9). We have the confident hope of an eternity in heaven with God. Paul writes, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God” (Romans 5:1-2). This peace is more than a feeling—it’s the steady confidence that our relationship with God has been restored through Jesus. No matter what we face, His presence quiets our hearts, His grace lifts our burdens, and His promise of eternity secures our hope. Living at peace with God means walking each day knowing we are fully forgiven, deeply loved, and never alone.
